Barb Keenan: 35 Years of Dedication and Impact

“I like to start things, get them going, and hang around,” Barb Keenan said with a smile as she reflected on her journey with Big Sisters. Her passion for building something meaningful has shaped the lives of countless young people and families in Northumberland for more than three decades.

In 1976, Barb recognized the need for mentorship and support for children in Northumberland. Partnering with the Children’s Aid Society, she led the charge to establish a Big Sisters agency. At first, Barb did it all—serving as caseworker, fundraiser, administrator, and interviewer for potential Big Sisters. Her dedication paid off when the organization secured a grant, allowing her to hire staff and expand services.

Barb’s vision extended beyond the local community. She played a pivotal role in founding Big Sisters Ontario, which established standards of practice and ensured stronger support for local chapters. In 1979 Northumberland Big Sisters officially incorporated—a milestone made possible by Barb’s determination and the support of board members, volunteers, and community champions.

As the organization grew, so did its ambition. Barb knew that for the organization to succeed, it needed a sustainable funding source. That’s how the Second Helpings Thrift Store was born, generating vital revenue to support programming as the organization grew. In 2004, Big Sisters and Big Brothers in Northumberland merged, creating a unified agency dedicated to helping children through meaningful mentoring relationships.

Reflecting on her time with the organization, Barb beamed with pride. “So many friendships have been created over my 35 years. It’s amazing to see Bigs and Littles still connected after 30 years.”

When asked what she wished people knew about the cause, Barb didn’t hesitate. “The impact is huge—not just for the kids, but for their families, the mentors, and the entire community. It shows kids an alternative way of living and opens their eyes to new possibilities.”

One story, still, fills Barb’s heart with joy. A Big Sister in Brighton had a Little who came from a struggling family. One day, the Big Sister decided to create a magical experience for her mentee. She set the table with fine dishes and prepared a beautiful meal. When the Little Sister arrived and saw the elegant setting, “Wow! Who’s this for?” she asked in amazement. The Big Sister smiled and said, “It’s for you—because you are special.”

That moment, Barb said, is just one example of how mentors can show children a world beyond their current circumstances, offering hope, joy, and new perspectives exemplifying the life-changing power of mentorship, something Barb witnessed time and time again.

Even 13 years into retirement, Barb still dreams about her time at Big Brothers Big Sisters. “It was inspiring to support youth in our community,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude. “It was a wonderful ride.”
